Women in Wildland Fire

The Women in Wildland Fire course is a hands-on, immersive training experience designed to introduce participants to the diverse career paths, operations, and leadership opportunities within the wildland fire community. Hosted by the Arizona Wildfire Academy in Prescott, AZ, this three-day program blends classroom instruction, field exercises, and mentorship to provide a realistic understanding of the wildland firefighting environment.

Participants gain practical experience in multiple operational areas, including engine and handcrew operations, helicopter support, prevention and fuels management, dispatch coordination, and public information. The course also includes safety and readiness components such as PPE review, tool handling, hose deployment, and shelter practice. Leadership development and career preparation are emphasized through mentoring sessions, the Granite Mountain Memorial hike, and workshops on applying for positions with federal and state agencies.

Completion of prerequisite online portion courses (S-130, S-190, and L-180) is required prior to attendance. Upon completion, students will have the foundational knowledge, technical skills, and professional insight to pursue positions in wildland fire management and related land management fields.

An official NWCG Certificate will be issued for S-130/190 upon successful completion of the three-day course. This certificate meets the requirements to be employed as a Wildland Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) and hold a Red Card to work on wildfires across the country.
